For a hundred books on the wild life of Africa there has been hardly one combining factual observation with the requirements of a ‘good traveller’s tale’ about the magnificent wild life of the Malayan jungle. The author has conducted many safaris there and has now written this compelling record, unique in its authentic portrayal of the great primeval forest and its inhabitants, both human and animal.
The jungle, however, is only part of the story he has to tell, for he takes his readers into the heart of Singapore’s Chinatown, to the coral kingdoms below the South China Sea, those manifestations of the slow and patient emergence of nature as architect, to the mysterious snake and monkey worshippers of Malaya, and to other scenes of rites and rituals.
Born and educated in England, Charles Shuttleworth joined the Malayan Police Jungle Force at the beginning of the emergency after the Second World War. In 1951 he was seriously wounded in a jungle action with Chinese Communist guerrillas. He now operates a company from Singapore called ‘Malayan Safaris’, he himself being a competent linguist with command of several Chinese dialects, Malay and a number of European languages, and has a working knowledge of Malayan aboriginal tongues and Hindustani.
