In 1946, Britain tried to fold Malaya into a single centralised colony — the Malayan Union. It stripped the Malay Rulers of their sovereignty and offered near-automatic citizenship to non-Malays. The backlash was immediate and unprecedented — and out of that resistance, UMNO was born.

Drawing on Cabinet papers, memoranda, and internal correspondence, Sopiee traces how Whitehall miscalculated the depth of Malay political consciousness, and how quickly it was forced to retreat. The Union collapsed. The Federation of Malaya rose in its place — restoring the Rulers' sovereignty, a direct concession to UMNO's campaign
