This is a fourth edition of a standard work on its subject first published in 1917. Sir John Marriot has not substantially altered the body of the work now well known to students, but to each successive editions has been added an Epilogue bringing the account of the course of events in the Near East up to date. In the epilogue to the edition published in 1924 after the conclusion of the Treaty of Lausanne with the paradox of Turkish history if the ultimate solution were to come not from the ingenuity and wisdom of the West, but from which the first time in the history of the Ottomans, aspire to a nation state, which ideals are not merely military but political.
