This paper is not concerned with the origin of settlement at Johore Lama, but merely with its institution and career as the capital of Johor Empire in the sixteenth century. The first two sections deal with the question of when Johore Lama became the capital ; the third examines the evidence for its continued existence in that dignity ; and the last section deals with events leading to the destruction of the city in 1587.
