Albert Bickmore was an American naturalist who arrived in Batavia (now Jakarta) in mid-1865 to catch a boat to the Spice Islands (the Moluccas) for the purpose of shell-collecting. Once his objectives of shell-collecting were achieved, he turned his attention to other aspects of natural history and proceeded to travel to several parts of the Malay archipelago. His book, based on a journal kept day by day with scrupulous care, covers Java, Bali, and Lombok, Sulawesi, the Moluccas, East Timur and much of Sumatra.
