Showing accounts of colonial writings on Malay history and culture and contemporary works on the political economy of pre-colonial society, the author points out that the former gave very little recognition to the presence of industry in Malay society and latter steered away from accepting the presence of a large manufacturing class, involved in the production of secondary goods.
