The Protected Malay States 1874-1895 (Emily Sadka)

This major study of the residential system, where sultans ran their states, but were 'advised' by British residents, covers the period from the beginning of active British involvement on the Malayan peninsula until the establishing of the Federated Malay States, under a more centralised administration. Sadka looks at the purpose, theory and practice of the residency system mainly as it affected Perak and Selangor, the initial members, and later Negeri Sembilan and Pahang.

The dust jacket is still in tact, but has seen better days. Previous damage has been badly repaired. The text block and end papers are heavily tanned. Otherwise the binding is tight, text clear and there is mild tanning throughout
