This book is a 547-page history of the Malayan Emergency — the guerrilla war waged by the Malayan Communist Party (MCP) and the Malayan Races' Liberation Army against British colonial authority.

Short was a former British Army intelligence officer who later lectured in politics at the University of Aberdeen. He got unrestricted access to Malayan Government confidential and secret papers, without comparable access to Communist sources — which shapes the book's viewpoint considerably.
