Fourth edition, 1904, of book originally published in 1898. But signed as a gift May, 1903. Bound in yellow cloth covered hard boards, black lettering to spine and upper board and with attractive decoration of white lilies to both spine and upper board. Frontispiece portrait/photograph of Swettenham.

Written as 37 "private" letters, many reflecting on his time spent in Malaya and Singapore where he rose through the ranks to become 15th Governor of the Straits Settlements from 1901 to 1904. The book is in good to very good condition, but some browning, a little wear and marking to the boards and light spotting inside. Otherwise decent copy of this historical and rare edition. Hence priced to sell.
