Pickering: Protector of Chinese

The book is a biography of William Alexander Pickering, a British colonial officer who became the first "Protector of Chinese" in the Straits Settlements.

The role was created after a report recommended that every incoming Chinese coolie should first encounter a British official who spoke their language and could let them know there was a government officer whose specific duty was to protect them.
