The arrival of Vasco Da Gama in Calicut in 1498 was in search of the famed spice, pepper (or black gold). This enabled the Portuguese to find the long sought out route to India. In 1505, Francisco De Almeida was made the governor/viceroy of Portuguese India for 3 years. After Almeida, Albuquerque was appointed the Governor in 1509. During his tenure, he greatly expanded Portuguese influence across India and other countries in the east.
The Portuguese furthered in creating several more settlements on the coasts of India. Some of them were Surat, Bombay, Goa, Mangalore, Cannanore, Calicut, Cochin, Quilon, Tuticorin, San Thome (Madras), and so on. His governorship ended in 1515 after a very tumultous period, he went back to Portugual from Goa. This vintage book on Albuquerque gives a complete treatise on his life and times.
