Guy Madoc begun writing this book while he was interned as a prisoner of war in Changi Jail, Singapore which was illegally invaded along with the then Malaya by the barbaric and murderous Imperial "Dai Nippon Bungsai" troops in 1942 until 1945. During this time, Mr. Madoc commenced writing this book under extreme traumatic circumstances. It was a real credit to him that due to ill-treatments by the barbaric jap troops and lack of proper food, Madoc wrote down his bird-watching observations, typed on paper stolen under the very nose of the Japanese commandant in jail.
His book became an entertainment source in Changi Jail and widely circulated among fellow prisoners, despite been spied on and monitored strictly by the "Kempetai" or secret jap police circulating then within the jail facility.
